this past weekend was the Gowanus Open Studios event where a ton of artists right here in the neighborhood a few blocks away (surrounding the gowanus canal) open up their studios for nosey people like ourselves. its so much fun to see some amazing art (and not so amazing) right in the studio where it is created.

omg...i absolutely love these! wish we could get one for our giant white wall in our living room.

a stuffed porcupine...not art...just a studio mascot i guess

when do you ever get to take your pic with the artist...and friends? cool!

a few weeks ago we went to the Gowanus Open Studios which is just a  few blocks from our house....one of my favorite fall events. Being 8 months pregnant kind of put a limit on how much walking around we could do but we still got to see a ton of art. AND buy something we both truly fell in love with too...not an easy task!

tucked behind another kind of boring artists studio we had seen in years past, we found Amy Weil  who creates these magical paintings using 'encaustic' technichs... from the artist herself  "my work embodies abstractions that parallel the cycles of nature by a process of scraping, adding, and fusing wax"... plus she was super nice and really great to talk to.

here's some shots of her tiny studio and the piece we bought hanging in our living room.

a while back i wrote this post about how excited i was to order these cool prints from inflateddeflated. it's taken me a while to even follow up because it was such a 'deflating' experience. the concept is such a great idea but dealing with the designers of this has been a freaking nightmare...to the point that i feel like an idiot (or dummy) even putting this art up on the wall. here's to hoping i get over it.
between the crazy long ship dates, printing on crappy paper,  shipping flat art in a soft envelope resulting in wrinkles and damage, and then another set of prints weeks later (that were slightly better prints), only to realize that they're a different size than specified, to which i then had to trim all of these down to fit the frames bought for specified size...ugh. ridiculous! i'll show you where we've put them in the next post (and no, it's not the trash)
i never would have thought professionals would've treated their own art so badly. so here i am venting like a crazy person so i don't give a bad review on etsy...i still have a heart!

great frames from amazon (about the only positive part of the experience...yay!)

i've posted before about our need for art our giant white walls...i mean c'mon 2 'artsy-fartsy' people like ourselves with no art? we're still really digging that "infalated-deflated" project and they keep coming up with new pieces....here's some new ones we're now considering (for a series of 3)

now that our living room dining room has some nice new furniture and rugs we need to do something about these enormous empty walls. since it's on the "schedule of the future" to renovate these rooms for real i guess we never fully embraced them and put anything on the walls...it finally hit me when my friend beth said "you're both designers and you have no art on your walls?"... that was 3 years ago.
these are the rooms we spend the most time in so it got a little nuts not to really try and make them as nice as can be until our walls are replastered and the floors are finished (so don't look at those :).

an idea we're toying around with are these great prints from inflatedeflated to hang above the table. could be fun and graphic as well as great conversation pieces.
